Getting started

Joey Tab is a shared expense tracker built specifically for coparents. It gives both parents a single, organized record of every child-related expense — medical, education, extracurricular, and more — with automatic split calculations and monthly PDF statements.

Think of it as the shared spreadsheet coparents have always cobbled together, but built properly: with real-time notifications, receipt storage, dispute tracking, and AI-generated statements.

One parent creates a household, sets up the children's names, and enters your agreed expense split (e.g. 50/50 or 60/40). You then invite the other parent with a single email link — they click it and join instantly, no separate subscription required.

The whole setup takes under five minutes.

Yes — both parents have their own login so each person has a clear, auditable view of the shared record. But only one subscription covers both of you. The inviting parent pays; the other parent joins at no cost.

Any percentage split you agree to — 50/50, 60/40, 70/30, or any other combination that totals 100%. You set it once when creating the household. Every expense and every monthly statement automatically reflects that split.

Logging expenses

Yes. Either parent can log an expense at any time. The moment an expense is submitted, the other parent receives an email notification. Both parents always see the same complete record in real time.

Expenses can be categorized as Medical & Health, Education, Extracurricular, Clothing, or Other. Categories are used to group expenses in your monthly statement, making it easy to see where spending falls.

Yes. When logging any expense you can attach a photo of the receipt — from your camera roll or by taking a photo on the spot. Receipts are stored with the expense record and accessible to both parents. No more digging through your inbox or camera roll when a question comes up later.

Disputes

Either parent can flag any expense as disputed. Disputed expenses are visually marked in the expense list, excluded from the monthly balance calculation, and excluded from the PDF statement until the dispute is resolved.

This keeps your statement accurate and prevents a contested item from inflating what's owed.

Joey Tab creates the paper trail — the clear record of what was logged, when, and by whom. Resolution happens between the two parents, outside the app. Once agreed, either parent can update the expense status back to approved, or delete it if it was logged in error.

Statements

At the end of each month, go to the Statements tab and click Generate. Joey Tab compiles all approved expenses for that month, calculates each parent's share based on your agreed split, and produces a clear plain-English statement showing the bottom line — who owes whom and how much.

Statements can be downloaded as a PDF.

Joey Tab is built with legal proceedings in mind. All records are stored server-side with immutable, server-generated timestamps — neither parent can edit, delete, or backdate a submitted expense. The Court Record Export generates a complete expense register, full audit trail, and a SHA-256 integrity hash that proves the document hasn't been altered since export. Many family law attorneys and mediators accept this type of tamper-evident documentation.

Joey Tab does not provide legal advice. Consult your attorney about evidentiary standards in your jurisdiction. See also: Court-admissible co-parenting expense records →

Starter plan subscribers can access up to 4 months of statement history. Family plan subscribers get a full 12-month archive plus an annual summary report.

Court records & legal proceedings

Joey Tab is designed with court-ready documentation in mind. All records are stored server-side with immutable, server-generated timestamps. Neither parent can edit, delete, or backdate a submitted expense after it's logged. The Court Record Export produces a complete expense register, full audit trail, and a SHA-256 integrity hash — a cryptographic signature proving the document has not been altered since it was generated.

Many family law attorneys and mediators accept this kind of tamper-evident documentation. Joey Tab is not a legal service; consult your attorney about your jurisdiction's specific evidentiary standards.

The Court Record Export is a comprehensive, print-ready document you can generate from your dashboard at any time. It includes:

  • Every expense ever submitted — approved and disputed — with dates, amounts, and who submitted them
  • The complete dispute history with notes from both parents
  • Every settlement payment logged
  • A full chronological audit trail showing exactly which parent took which action and when
  • A SHA-256 integrity hash computed at the moment of generation — any post-export tampering produces a different hash

The document is formatted to be presented to a judge, mediator, or family law attorney. Open it from your dashboard → Statements section → Court Records Export.

Expense records in Joey Tab are append-only — once submitted, they cannot be edited or deleted by either parent. Every action (submitting, disputing, resolving, generating a statement) is permanently written to an audit log with a server-generated timestamp neither party controls. This append-only design ensures the record of what happened and when is preserved, regardless of subsequent activity.

Yes, for expense records. Courts often recommend OurFamilyWizard because it maintains an immutable, certified audit trail. Joey Tab provides the same protections for shared expenses: server-generated timestamps, records neither parent can alter, a complete action-by-action audit log, and a Court Record Export with a SHA-256 integrity hash.

The difference is cost and scope. OurFamilyWizard charges $170+/year per parent for a full communications platform. Joey Tab covers both parents for $9/month — and for co-parents who specifically need expense documentation, it delivers the same court-record standard at a fraction of the price.

If your decree names a specific platform (e.g. OurFamilyWizard), use that one to comply with the order. If your decree requires "documented expense tracking," a "verifiable record," or similar language without naming a specific tool, Joey Tab's tamper-evident records, immutable audit log, and Court Record Export are designed to satisfy that requirement. Review your specific order with your family law attorney.

Child support & settlements

Yes. Joey Tab has a dedicated child support payment log where you can record each payment — who paid, the amount, the date, and any notes. This gives you a clean, timestamped record separate from your shared expense tracking.

A settlement is a balance payoff — when one parent pays the other to settle what's owed based on the monthly expense balance. You can log these directly in the app so both parents have a full audit trail of when and how the balance was cleared.

Yes. When logging an expense you can mark it as recurring (weekly, monthly, or annually). This is useful for standing costs like after-school program fees, tutoring, or therapy sessions that repeat on a regular schedule.

No — Joey Tab is a tracking and documentation tool, not a payment processor. Parents handle the actual transfers however they prefer (Zelle, Venmo, bank transfer, check). Joey Tab gives you the clean record of what's owed, and lets you log when a settlement was made.

This keeps things simple and avoids the compliance complexity of moving money between parties.

Comparing co-parenting apps

Joey Tab is purpose-built for co-parenting expense tracking, starting at $9/month — one subscription covers both parents. Competitors like OurFamilyWizard charge $170+ per parent per year and bolt expense tracking onto a messaging platform. Joey Tab includes AI-generated PDF statements, receipt OCR scanning, budget proposals with approval tracking, child support logging, settlement tracking, CSV export, and installs on any phone as a PWA — no app store needed.

OurFamilyWizard is a full co-parenting communication suite — messaging, custody calendars, expense tracking, info bank, and more. That breadth costs $179+/year per parent. Joey Tab is purpose-built for expense tracking only, at a fraction of the cost. If you already have a communication system that works (texting, email, a parenting app) and just need a clean expense record, Joey Tab is the better fit.

Joey Tab offers a free trial so you can test it fully before paying. After the trial, plans start at $9/month — covering both parents. Free alternatives like Google Sheets work in a pinch but lack notifications, dispute tracking, PDF exports, and a shared real-time record. Most coparents find the structure and paper trail well worth a few dollars a month.

Mobile & access

Joey Tab is a Progressive Web App (PWA) — it works in any browser and can be installed directly on your home screen, no app store required. On iPhone: open joeytab.com in Safari, tap the Share button, and choose "Add to Home Screen." On Android: Chrome will prompt you to install it automatically.

You get the same app-like experience — offline access, home screen icon, full-screen mode — without needing a download.

Yes. Tap the camera icon next to any new expense and point your phone at a receipt. Joey Tab uses AI to read the amount, date, and description and pre-fills the expense form for you. You just confirm and save — no manual typing needed.

Yes. From the dashboard you can export all expenses for any month as a CSV file, compatible with Excel, Google Sheets, or any spreadsheet software. PDF statements are also available for each month. Family plan subscribers get a full 12-month archive and an annual summary report.
